Update to iOS 5.1 removed bookmarks?

I updated my iPhone to 5.1 yesterday. Today I opened Safari on my MacBook Pro and all of my bookmarks are gone. Sooo, I checked the phone. Gone there too. (Both devices are synced over iCloud.) Anyone else have this issue? Any ideas how to retrieve my bookmarks? Thanks in advance.

Hi Randy ...

On your Mac open System Preferences > iCloud

Deslect the box next to Bookmarks, then reselect it then restart your Mac.

On the iPhone tap Settings > iCloud

Toggle Bookmarks off then back on then restart the device.

Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button down until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPhone. To turn iPhone back on, press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

Randy...

Is the above a "this should work and if not your out of luck" type suggetion

Not at all and that suggestion has helped other users. Same suggestions here > iCloud: Troubleshooting iCloud Bookmarks

I suggest that first since it usually works.

As I'm sure you are aware, you can save your Bookmarks to re imported if necessary.

From the Safari menu bar click File > Export Bookmarks. Save that file to an external source in case you need to re import the Bookmarks.

Yes, postive. It's been the same since 2005. This is so odd.

I was able to restore from TM. Thanks, Carolyn.

I wasn't able to find file "SafariBookmarks.html" but, from a January posting of yours to another user with the same issue, did find the .plist in the Library in TM and used that. All is well in my little corner of the world.

Hi Carolyn. I'm sorry to ask for your help again. It happened again. It believe it was triggered when I turned my computer off and restarted it later in the day. I was using it this morning and all was well. I shut it off, came home tonight, turned it back on and the bookmarks are all gone. Is there some setting you can think of that I may have inadvertently switched on or off that's resetting my bookmarks upon restart? Another note, my iPhone never did repopulate the bookmarks despite both devices being set to sync with iClown. Many thanks. -Scott

Sorry to hear you are having problems with Bookmarks. I've yet to have any issues with iCloud.

Try troubleshooting the Safari .plist (preferences)

Go to ~/Library/Preferences

Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash.

Quit then relaunch Safari to test.

On another note, continually turning off your Mac and rebooting over time can cause wear and tear on the hard drive. Better to allow the Mac to sleep instead. Open System Preferences > Energy Saver to make changes.

Thank you, Carolyn. I just phoned into Apple Care because I also noticed my photos weren't syncing between iPhoto and iPhone. I don't understand it but they had me do your very first suggestion, which I tried twice earlier and it worked. I even powered down and back on with no loss off bookmarks.

On the note of turning the Mac on & off, I do so when transporting it. Otherwise, sleep. Do you feel it's safe to transport a sleeping laptop in a backpack? Am I just behind the curve and still practicing outdated hard drive safety precautions?
