Error , problems updating to iOS 5.1

I would just keep trying, as the error is most likely with Apple's servers.

I've been trying since Wednesday. I have a 4 not a 4s. When you say you "kept trying" do you mean you just kept hitting the download button? For two days? Hmm. Anything else to try? I've rebooted, turned on and off the wireless, etc. But two days seems a bit excessive. It's not been this long for other major updates. My iPad updated on Thurs morn. Thoughts?

I am having the same problem updating my iPhone 4. iPad updated fine this morning. But I get message "error occurred downloading iOS 5.1", when trying to update iPhone. I am sure it is an apple server issue. Millions of iPhone users all want their update NOW including me. I have decide to try not to obsess since it is a minor update. Iit should work fine in a few days. Good luck to you and thank you for sharing.

I have had success with following these instructions:

If you’re having trouble downloading iOS 5.1 from Apple’s servers, try these fixes:

Reset Network Settings on iOS Device: Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings

Then -

Changing DNS in iOS

Tap on Settings, tap on “Wi-Fi”, and tap on the blue arrow next to the router name

Under “DHCP” tab tap on “DNS” and replace with: “8.8.8.8″ for Google DNS, or “208.67.222.222″ for OpenDNS

Tap the Back button and attempt to use OTA again

I changed my DNS for my home wireless through my iPhone to 208.67.222.222

Updated the 4S easily. 4 and iPads 1 and 2 were stuck at the end of downloading for around 30 minutes. I'm on 22 mps cable WiFi. As I was about to make an appointment at an Apple Store to let them sort this out all of the devices finished updating and started installing.

I suspect that Apple is having server issues and we need to be very patient at this time. I'm only a few miles from Apple HQ so distance from servers shouldn't be the issue. They are probably using one of the new data centers about a mile from me.

I'm also very close to Apple HQ :)

About 2 miles. I updated all my iOS devices Wednesday evening.
