After upgrading to ios5.1 photo app crashes when trying to edit "cropping"photos. I've shut it down and also tried a reboot.

Does anyone else experience this problem?

When I try to edit photos in the photo app and in the camera app

I try to crop them and the system will randomly crash. Giving me

either a circle ticking logo on a black screen or the system will

reboot completely with a black screen, Apple logo, and then

back to the lock screen.

I just experienced this also. This nevere happened to me until I upgraded to iOS 5.1

I tried to crop a screen shot I took and as soon as I clicked on the crop square symbol, my phone went instantly to a black screen with a very skinny red line horizontaly across my screen. My phone rebooted and I tried once more and the same thing happened except without the red line.

Hopefully its just a bug with the update and will be fixed soon.

An update I would love to see sometime is the capability of not being able to turn off your phone from a lock screen.

I recently lost my white iPhone 4s and I could not use the app Find my iPhone because the thief turned it off.

Therefore, it would be impossible for the person to turn off their phone without unlocking the phone. It's a headache, but trust me; I'd rather waste a few extra seconds unlocking my phone to power off (which I rarely ever do) than spend $500 for a whole new phone and the headache of retrieving everything from iCloud.

Apple needs to come up with an update to fix this. I have this same problem but it doesn't crash on my older pictures. I took a screen shot and went to crop it and bam! It restarts. Tried everything from deleting a few pictures to ending the task and restarting the phone and everything I could think of and still have this problem. I went to go into my photos again and it crashed this trying to open them up. Apple needs to do something about this. This is just frustrating

I have been experiencing the exact same thing every day on my iPhone 4S after upgrading to iOS 5.1.

Apps are spontaneously crashing, resulting in a black screen with the spinning wheel indicator, and then after a not-too-long delay (i.e., much shorter than a full reboot or restart) the phone returns me to the Lock Screen.

This has happened multiple times every day since the upgrade and does not appear to be isolated to any particular app. I've had it happen with Tweetbot, Photos, Agenda, Mail, and other apps.

Clearly, a serious issue with the iOS 5.1 update. Um, obviously I too hope Apple can resolve this ASAP. I have never had a public release version of iOS that has caused as many problems.

same here the genious camera app crop function still works, tried to return the phone to factory settings and use the backup from the 16th but 12hrs latter trying to get my contacts and other stuff back in order from icloud is getting really bad. the apple crop funtion renders the photo to looking lke its an 8bit picture. but it only does it to pics that are saved from the web not ones that are taken with the phone. I have 3 iphones and this one is the only one doing it and it happens to be mine. but the 3rdparty app genious camera like i said still works

Adam,

I did like you suggested and backed up all my photos, removed them from my device restored my device to factory settings and then reinstalled my photos and I have not had the issue arise again. So, I believe you were correct in that I had a corrupted photo (or photo's metadata) that was causing the bizarre random crash.

David,

It's very strange though, because it seems like it's not universal. My 4S for example has been running without issue. I wonder if it's possible if there is a corrupt photo in the library that could trigger it anytime an app tries to access the photo library. Have you tried backing up, removing all photos from the iOS library, and then before restoring the photos to the device taking a couple shots on the device and seeing if the crashing goes away?

Adam

I have a PC running Windows Vista so what I had to do was in iTunes make sure that all my photos were SYNC'd with my pictures directory. After that when I was sure that I had all the photos that were on my iPhone in my windows pictures directories then I deleted all my pictures off of my iPhone. In order to do this once you plug your iPhone into your computer via the 30 pin dock connector cable, and after the computer recognizes your iPhone, a window will pop up in Windows that shows your device. iOs will allow you to open up a file folder that contains your photos.

Note: there may be several file folders depending on the library size of your pictures and if you have photo stream enabled. In my case I had four folders and these folders or a combination of numbers and letters. These folder names are randomly generated through iOS but just be aware that these folders contain your photos and videos. I know that one folder was just my photo stream because I did not have very many pictures, and two folders had my entire photo library and camera roll in them and another folder had just my videos in it.

The process is pretty simple: once I open these folders, I highlighted all my pictures and deleted them. Once they were deleted off the phone then I went into the iTunes "summary" page for my iPhone. I then went to the "photos" tab and I made sure that the box was checked to sync my photos. In my case I don't have my entire photo library on my phone so I have selected folders button checked. Then I just SYNC'd my phone again. It didn't take too long for iTunes to transfer all my photos back to my phone. After this process was complete I checked all my photos and tried to crop them and had no problems. I also did some screen captures on my phone by pressing the sleep/wake button and the home button at the same time. Again I tried to crop photos and had no problem.

So what I believe with the expert advice from Adam Christiansen of the Mac cast podcast was that I had a corrupt photo file or corrupt metadata from a photo file. So what this was doing was causing a system crash and reboot in iOS. I was able to verify this in my diagnostic files on my iPhone in the settings / general / about / diagnostics and usage / diagnostics and usage data TABS.

I HOPE THIS HELPS YOU AS IT ALLEVIATED MY PROBLEM. I HAVEN'T HAD ANYMORE PROBLEMS WITH THIS ISSUE AND WHAT I'VE DESCRIBED ABOVE IS A WAY TO DO IT WITHOUT RESTORING YOUR ENTIRE IPHONE. IF YOU STILL HAVE PROBLEMS AFTER DOING THIS THEN YOU HAVE ANOTHER PROBLEM WHICH PROBABLY REQUIRES THAT YOU DO DO A COMPLETE RESTORE OF YOUR IPHONE. BUT BEFORE YOU DO THE RESTORE MAKE SURE THAT YOU BACKUP YOUR IPHONE AND I WOULD SUGGEST DOING THAT TO YOUR COMPUTER AND NOT TO ICLOUD; MY REASON FOR THIS IS THOUGH ICLOUD IS A WAY TO DO IT IT JUST TAKES MORE TIME TO RESTORE FROM A BACKUP VIA ICLOUD AS OPPOSED TO A TETHERED BACKUP VIA THE 30 PIN DOCK CONNECTOR CABLE TO YOUR COMPUTER.

After upgrading to ios5.1 photo app crashes when trying to edit "cropping"photos. I've shut it down and also tried a reboot.
