We had users with the same problem. They booted the phone in dfu recovery mode and did a restore to the pre-upgrade version they had on backup and it worked for them. This doesn't get you the new OS version, but they did have a functional device....here is a link on doing a restore from dfu recovery mode if you haven't seen it before...

so I'd skip the update if that is possible( and try and recover the phone without doing an update), and from iTunes when you get the message that the phone is detected in recovery mode, just select the recover option..that should restore the phone to it's pre update version...at the end of the restore, you can also select your last backup and restore that...if you have the usb logo on the home screen and you are being forced to update, you might also try to disconnect from iTunes and then reconnect..as long as the USB logo is in place, it should allow you to recover the phone...or you could also go through the described process ( in the kb) as far as forcing it in dfu recovery mode and then connect to iTunes...I believe it would be possible to skip the update using that technique

Ok forget the upgrade. Then when I'm connected to iTunes it forces me to Restore. It attempts to Restore and about 8 to 11 mins into downloading it repeats the warning, "iTunes detected an iPhone in recovery mode....." After the 20 to 30 min downloading I still get the message, "iTunes detected and iPhone to recovery mode..."

Stuck in a loop...

I did a search on "recovery mode loop"..you might take a look at the following threads to get some ideas...some mention is made of "USB conflicts"..not sure how valid that is.....they also mention doing a hard power down of the device...sounds like if you absolutely can't get it out of recovery mode, a trip to the Genius bar will be necessary...

Still in recovery mode loop. I called the Apple help they told me to delete in sequence: 1. iTunes, 2. QuickTime, 3. Apple Software Update 4. Apple Mobile Devices 5. Bonjour and 6. Apple Application Support. Shut down the pc and reboot. I did all of this. Reinstalled iTunes and QuickTime. Then opened iTunes and reconnected the iPhone 4 via USB. It detected an iPhone that is in recovery mode...Then I went to Restore the iPhone. Download started and about 11 mins into this download the pop-up of stating, "iTune detected iPhone in recovery mode...

The iTunes logo and USB plug are on my iPhone screen...and I'm still stuck.😟

My phone got stuck this morning when I saw the update message. I tried rebooting but it was stuck all day. When I connected to itunes message said it could not find the software to restore the phone. When I called apple they said the server was clogged with so many people updating. Suggested I try tomorrow and will call me again at 4 pm. I'm deaf and can't even find a chat link on the apple web site so have to have another person to call for me. *****!

I had the same problem, stuck in recovery mode and was just going round in circles.

Disabled all anti-virus, spyware etc. Disconnected all non-essential USB devices and also moved the iPhone cable into a different USB port and it suddenly decided to restore. I'm not sure which one of the above worked but it was probably a combination of them all.

This is the same exact problem I am having. I have tried everything and Apple support walked my husband (I'm deaf) through the same things to delete/uninstall and re-install, etc. He was on with them for 2 hours and $29.99 payment and NOTHING. I'm not happy about this and don't know what else to do. I tried to get into DFU mode and still no luck getting past the recovery mode. I'm sick of seeing the USB and iTunes logo on there.
