Pages can't open document

iCloud setup on iPad 2 and iPhone 4.

Pages installed on both.

Documents sync perfectly between the two.

Yesterday I opened a document, no problems.

Today 10 of my documents have no preview, they are a black pages icon. The rest of my documents are fine.

I cannot open these icons "Document can't be opened" on either device.

Deleted and reinstalled pages, no effect. (Pages synced all documents from iCloud, but it synced the black documents as well)

How do I fix this so that I can open these documents again?

What happened?

iPad 2, iOS 5.1

When I said "the documents synced perfectly" I was unclear. I apologize.

I meant that any minor change I make to any document which I can't still open is synced to the other device very quickly.

When I said that I "opened 1 document yesterday" I was unclear. I apologize.

I meant that Yesterday I opened one of the now compromised documents and it worked correctly.

I do not have backups of the documents unfortunately.

Fortunately they were not mission critical and can be recreated relatively easily.

The reason I would like to resolve the problem is so that I can be comfortable using the service in the future.

I have been using the service not for backups, but for the extreme convienience of having documents on hand and up to date at all times.

Apple, please fix this minor issue so that it does not reoccur, provide an explanation of how it was a one time thing, or apologize for the inconvienience and recommended an alternate service.

Thank you.

Hey AndrewNotAndy, this sounds like the same problem I experienced today so I thought I'd re-post this here in case it helps.

I opened up Pages & Numbers on my iPad this evening, and all the icons were black. Clicking on any of them gave me the 'Document can't be opened' message. If I signed into iCloud.com, I couldn't download the documents either.

After a lot of messing around, it seems like it was something to do with file conflicts. Maybe this all happened when I updated to iOS 5.1 or the new Pages/Numbers App updates last week? I don't know, but somewhere along the line, the file conflicts were blocking all documents from being accessed and synced properly.

The way I fixed it was to fire up Pages & Numbers on my iPhone. It showed me my documents, but when I clicked on them, they told me there were conflicts in the files, and presented me with two options, one a black icon, the other a normal document icon. I clicked on the normal one, and the document seemed to open and load. Additionally, with Numbers at least, the files all updated on the iPad too, and all the documents could now be downloaded via iCloud.com. I had an issue with Pages on the iPad, in that it wasn't updating the documents as I was fixing them on the iPhone, so I simply uninstalled Pages on the iPad, and then re-installed. Once iCloud was enabled, all the documents loaded up properly.

Also, another tip.. until iCloud gets fixed-up good 'n proper, for your own piece of mind, whenever you edit a document in Pages/Numbers/Keynote, just before you finish-up, hit the 'wrench' icon, choose the 'Share and Print' option, and then click 'Save to iTunes'. Choose the first file type, and it'll save a copy in a different location on your iPad. It only adds a few seconds to your workflow, but could save you a LOT of heartache. If a file gets corrupted by Pages or deleted/corrupted by iCloud, you can simply click the + button on the Documents page, and select 'Copy from iTunes'. This will show you all the documents you saved. They'll also show up in iTunes should you want to pull them off the iPad quickly.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

I have had the same problem since the end of February 2012: I couldn't open any documents which were created before a certain date. I assumed it was a Pages or iOS update.

This morning I went into settings and updated my iCloud password; I know I've changed my apple account password recently and I haven't updated the settings for iCloud.

For me this worked - the new documents in Pages (which I must have created after the apple account password change) started synching with iCloud. The ones which I couldn't open (created before the password change) - I now can open.

Now, all that Pages needs is a warning messages which says "your iCloud password is incorrect please update your settings" so you know exactly what to do.

I've submitted the details to Apple.

I hope this helps someone out there.

Andrew
