Went through the email account set up set name password and security questions. I then tried to install a free app when it asked for username input it then password says password invalid, comes to the security question answer it and get the message invalid.

Your email setup has nothing to do with the Apple ID password required for purchasing and updating apps. If your password for your Apple ID isn't working you will probably have to reset it by going to https://iforgot.apple.com.
