I'm having this problem as well. I keeps saying that it's unable to download the software update, try again later etc.

I've been doing some searching around on here and so far the only solutions I've seen are 1. Restore and update your ATV2 through iTunes via a micro USB and 2. Reconfigure your DNS settings on your router.

I've tried 1. I plugged the ATV directly into my iMac and tried to restore and update via iTunes, but it didn't work. Literally nothing happened, and after 45 minutes I gave up.

I'm not willing to reconfigure my DNS settings in order to install an update. That's a silly solution that Apple can't possible expect the average user to be able to execute.

So I'm back where I started. Unable to update.

Have you heard of any other solutions??

I had the same problem: I couldn't update my iphone or my appletv. I ended up unplugging my router and using a direct ethernet connection to get my iphone to update, but I didn't want to have to deal with that again for the appletv (if that is even possible). After doing more investigating in some of the other threads, I found something that works and is not complicated at all. You do have to change the DNS for your router, but if you go to openDNS.com, the site will walk you through the process. It is very easy, and it works - my appletv is updating right now, and it started right away on the first try after changing the DNS. I agree that it is annoying that we have to do that at all, and I never had any problems before, but there is an easy "fix" until apple does a real fix.

Direction from another thread

Thee solution is more simple than that. Just go to the ATV settings => General => Network => Configure TCP/IP => Manually=> Skip the IP address going directly to DONE = > Skip the Subnet Mask going directly to DONE =>Skip the Router Address going directly to DONE=> Now change the DNS Address to 208.067.222.222 ( before changing the setting write the number down so you can change it back once you finish) and hit done. Once you get the "Configuration Succeeded Message hit DONE and go back to Update Software. It will take a like 20 seconds to start downloading. Once the upgrade is completed follow the same instructions to go back and change the DNS Address to the original number. I have two ATV where I used this method and worked flawless. Hope this help
