"Forget this network" option is missing since upgrade to 5.1

And earlier this evening I was constantly having to re-enter my password for my wifi network as the connection kept dropping. I don't know why it wasn't saving the password.

But I noticed that the "forget this network" red option bar is missing.

Any ideas?

Not missing when I view my wi-fi network settings, which is located at the top and is not red.

You can also go to Settings > General > Reset and select Reset Network Settings which will erase all saved wi-fi networks and settings from your iPhone.

Hey,

I completely forgot about this. I found an answer. In your router's settings change the SSID (I think that's what it's called - basically the name of the network you see when you are connecting to it). I changed mine from Netgear to Netgear1 and it solved the problem. I don't know why. Having restored the phone it shouldn't be remembering the old SSID anyway.

Even after changing I tried changing back and the same problems returned. The absence of the "forget this network" option suggests the phone has a problem in some way with you connecting to a network you've previously connected to prior to the update/restore.

Brophs - thankfully the only thing that helped was to change the name (SSID) of my router, as you had indicated. "Forget this network" now appears and it auto logs-in when I get home.

Previous to this I had tried the "reset network settings".

I had originally had a problem with my 3G network from the OTA update (5.01 to 5.1), so restored via Mac iTunes.

Yet to see if it happens again.

I've found the solution.

Go in settings

->wifi

->disable wifi if you are connected to the router

->re-enable wifi

->tap on "other"

->enter the router name (exactly the same!) and the password.

->DONE!

This procedure has fixed the issue for me. Now the password is saved and I don't have to type it everytime i want to reconnect to my router. Also the button "forget this network" is now there.

Pyngwie,

The procedure you described also worked for me. I too stumbled on the fix out of desperation, the mother of all innovation. 😉

By the way I spoke to an "Apple Care" tech, he did not volunteer this solution but when I mentioned that I had done this and it fixed the "Forgetting Password" problem he acknowledged that he was aware that this was a known work-around. And suggested that I just accept it and move on... Ugh!

PS - The Tech was not being indifferent or hostile, In fact he was friendly and helpful. I don't know if they are just not supposed to offer this tip or it just slipped his mind (???). I just don't want to lead anyone to believe that the Tech was not being as helpful as he could be.

There seem to be two fixes for the problem of iPads forgetting wi-fi passwords and leaving off the "forget network" button:

1: Be attached to a network with a real name (ie NOT the default name that came with the router, default/netgear/linksys)

2: Manually enter the network under the "other" option (as described above)

From this I would guess that Apple has installed an undocumented security feature in the iOS for the iPad to keep it from broadcasting your network security codes everytime it gets within range of a router using default settings. It might help keep people from getting your security codes with a packet sniffer, but because it's undocumented it is a pain in the tail.
