Microsoft Word had "disappeared" from my iMac where could it have gone?

I purchased microsoft office when i bought my mac from the online store. All other ms products are working except ms word. it had just "disappeared." where has it gone and how do I get it back?

iMac (27-inch Mid 2010), Mac OS X (10.6.8)

You may have inadvertently dragged it away from your Dock.


There are several ways to find it, the easiest might be to simply select Recent Documents from the Apple menu, and find a Word document. When Word launches, drag its icon from the dock and without letting go, drag it right back in again. It will stay there.


Other ways are Spotlight search, or go to your Applications folder and drag it to the Dock.

I have done a spotlight search and also under applications/microsoft office, etc. I do know about dragging and undragging from the dock but thank you i have made that mistake in the past. It appears as if it was just never there, aside from what is/was the MS "W" logo in the dock, there was a question mark behind it. When i open any of my .docx files which would normally be opened by ms word, they open to the textedit app.

If the actual Microsoft Word application is not in the Microsoft Office folder in Applications and spotlight cannot find it somehow you deleted it. The question mark in the dock is only because the original got moved or deleted from where the dock thiks it is.


I don't know how you deleted it but do you have the Office installer? If so, just reinstall it.

Apologies for having assumed you wouldn't know about dragging it off the dock. From what you describe, it certainly does sound like Word is really gone!


The question mark means that Work is no longer where the Dock expects to find it.


Have you checked the Trash (though Spotlight should have found it there)?


If you really deleted it, I am not familiar with how you can prove to MS that you really bought it and are entitled to it, but the first thing I would try is to download the "trial version" again from MS. If you paid for it the registration information should still be present and it will run without complaint.

If this was bought from apple with office preinstalled then you might just try calling apple or go to the apple store and explain the situation and they may be able to replace it for you. I assume your stuff was registered so they have records of what you ordered.


On the other hand, since you already do have MS installed and registered then you should be able to extract Word out of the trial. Note the trial office is a 900MB download!
