macbook pro problem - "water damage"- Really?

I just sent a 6 month old macbook pro off for warranty repair. I received a call from apple telling me that they would not honor the warranty because of water damage. My computer has never been subjected to any liquid either by accident or intentionally. I'm wondering if the seals on the computer are faulty?

Has anyone else had a similar experience? This repair has been quoted to me as $755 without tax.

I'm interested in finding anyone else who has run into this problem with the hopes of getting apple to re-think their manufacturing and testing process. Maybe they screwed up and don't want to admit it?

Laptops are meant to be taken from place to place aren't they? They should be able to withstand humidity and be safe from "water damage" even in the rain if they are kept in the safety of their protective carrying case shouldn't they?

Let me know if you have had this problem too so I can see if this is a common occurance.

You are correct. It is not normal. About 3 years ago (maybe 4) I spilled liquid on my MacBook Pro and it cost me a little over $300 for the repairs, that included everything. I was having problems with my new MacBook Pro I purchased recently and went in to have it checked. They said there was water damage but I never spilled liquid on my computer; I discussed this already in this discussion months ago. Apple told me it would be $1,300 plus to get it fixed. How do they go from a $300 fix to a fix that costs the same as one of their new computers? So no, it is definitely not normal at all. Something is afoot.

I am experiencing this exact issue at present. I dealt with apple about over a week ago on this and ended up no where.

I had a horrific experience with apple!! HORRIBLE!!! My husband and I have been loyal Apple customers for well over 10 years now. We have several of almost every Apple device. Macbooks, iPads, iMac, iPods, iPhones, etc.

In fact I just purchased a brand new iPad which I will be returning after this experience. I brought in my macbook for an issue of dead pixels in my screen and screen delamination. As well as a big white spot growing on my screen. This is the third laptop I had from my original Macbook purchase, the first two had screen problems as well, which included dead pixels. I returned both under the 14-day return policy.

After that I thought that I had finally ended up with a macbook screen that would not be a problem, I was wrong. Our last 2 macbook pro's lasted over 5 years with NO issues ever.

The biggest upset is Apple has unofficially acknowledged the screen delamination as a known issue now for the new MBr. One I was told they are actually honoring up to 2 years after the warranty is up.

When I took it in, Im told everything is going to be covered and i'm good to go. The repair would be $435, but it's covered under my warranty so zero cost to me. I was so happy my first warranty issue with Apple was a smooth experience. NOPE too good to be true apparently. I get a call at almost 9pm later the same day being told upon opening my laptop, there is apparently water damage. Which I do not believe for a SECOND, I take amazing care of my laptop and have never had any liquid near it ever!! He tells me not only are they now not going to cover it, it will now be $770 instead and I have to pay all of it since it has to be sent out now because they can't touch it anymore.

He tells me this has nothing to do with the supposed water damage but it's no longer in a warrantable condition so it can't be covered or repaired by them. EVEN THOUGH THEY KNOW THIS IS A FREAKING DEFECT THAT IS THEIR FAULT!!!! This has nothing to do with that and it's bull crap and to say I am livid, is an understatement. He was so rude and patronizing, I was literally in tears. This is the first apple warranty claim I have ever needed to make in all of my years of being an Apple owner and the "gem" of an experience they fed me has killed my love for Apple. I spent over $1400 on this piece of garbage laptop, which shouldn't have a screen that's falling apart! One which I had to return not once but TWICE.

To top it off, they refuse to explain anything to me or even show me this supposed water damage, which I might add, according to this stores reviews is a VERY FREQUENTLY used "issue" for why they refuse to honor Apple Warranty. All I can say is thank god I did not buy their joke of an AppleCare Warranty, because I would be out even more money for something that would be voided!!

THEN TO TOP ALL OF THIS OFF!! I notice the repair notes say it's scratched on the bottom case, which I know it isn't because I have had a case on it the entire time i've owned it (which is less than a year). So I look over my laptop and don't see any scratches at all. However, what I do notice is a couple of the screws look stripped and pretty beat up, so I call AppleCare (did NOT want to deal with the store) and they tell me to call the store, they will be happy to replace the screws.... So I reluctantly call them..

NOPE!! He says to me, well I need to check the notes to see if there was any damage to them prior to you bringing it in. So he goes and checks, comes back to the phone. Since he couldn't find anything in the notes that specified I HAD damaged the screws prior to repair, HE then accuses ME of trying to get into the laptop myself, I had just picked it up!!! The associate was so rude and had nothing but an attitude and told me they wouldn't be fixing anything or replacing the screws. I WILL NEVER EVER EVER buy another Apple product again and will be returning my newly purchased iPad, because i'm sure if I ever have to use the warranty, it will conveniently have water damage!! I will purchase from a company who doesn't lie and deceive their customers and actually honors their warranty. I have never been so upset or treated so badly with any company before this. Usually when you go higher up, you are helped or given real solutions, not treated like a criminal.

Hey @marc_ny I am having the same problem. I have a MacBook Air 13" and a 3 year warranty for it. It stopped working suddenly and the apple techs said that it is due to water damage. And of course the issue is similar, no water nowhere near the laptop. They are charging me 45000 Rs ($750) . This is absolutely ridiculous. I am student. I cant even afford it. Now its like I have to give up my studies for this laptop repair alone. My whole life is in that laptop. Ad it's sitting dead in my bag. I can't even work without it. The problem might be due to humidity or condensation or whatever physical or chemical process. This is serious. Apple should make a policy for this.

Same story here - 18 month old Mac Air failed. Took it to authorized dealer - was told it was 'very clean' inside, and that the logic board had failed - they would replace it - good as new. They could not get a replacement in time for me (I was near the end of a trip away from home). Brought it to Apple Genius at home a week later - they say 'corrosion damage - unrepairable'. That Mac Air spent 2 months in the same room as two other (four-year older) Mac Airs. They did not fail - just this 2014 model that is so often cited on this site as failing 'due to liquid', despite being every bit as dry as others have reported. The 'Genius' was insulting. I still had the receipt from the first Apple dealer saying it was clean - so what was different? The first dealer was in Hawaii - the logic board repair would come out of my pocket because it is beyond the one year warranty. But, the Air was bought and spent most of its life in Australia where there is a two year consumer law warranty - the repair would come out of Apple's pocket. Unless, of course, they could contradict the first repair center, using the theme of this thread - 'liquid damage'. 'I would not lie' said the Genius. I would not lie either. Three out of five Apple computers bought here in the last 2 years have failed. Guess what they were replaced with? (you don't need to be a Genius to answer)

Same thing happened to me. Bought a MacBook Pro, about 3 months later it turned off whilst I was using it.

Took it to the Apple store the next day and assumed it would be fixed/replaced under warranty, however the shop assistant bought my MacBook back to me saying it was water damage and would cost $850 to be repaired.

But there is no doubt in my mind that there is no water damage, not from liquid nor steam from bathroom/condensation from weather. It has never left my house and he was only 3 months old. I don't think I can stand to spend the $850, after I've just parted with I think $1,700 for the purchase. So it is sitting in it's bag for now.

After I don't know how many iPod's, 3 iPhones, 1 iPad, 1 MacBook Pro I will never buy an Apple product again.

There have been a lot of posts around lately about this problem. Did you ask to see the liquid sensors that had changed color? Water damage would have also caused corrosion damage, did you ask to be shown that?

Even if there was water damage ( Not saying there was.) they should have offered you a "depot repair" especially since the logic board was clean (If it was.) That would normally be around $300.

I have same problem with new mac book air early 2015 (I bought it on january 2016) still under warranty. I received a call from apple telling me that they would not honor the warranty because of water damage!!! To my knowledge my computer has never been subjected to any liquid either by accident or intentionally.

I confirm I have a similar experience. A repair proposal between $500 and $800 without tax.

I agree with you laptops are supposed to be taken from place to place. They should be able to withstand humidity and be safe from "water damage" even in the rain if they are kept in the safety of their protective carrying case.

Water spilled on mac book.. went to Apple care..they give $ 755 for the complete repair. Its almost around new mac book cost. How they are giving this quote.. it will mostly key board need to replace, Why apple team can check and tell us what need to replace and based on that they can quote. I think we should not go to apple care for water damage. MY laptop is still under warranty, at least they can offer water clean up and need to change any part then they can give quote. It is really frustrating that without knowing the damage giving this quote. This quote is telling that for small water spill will damage complete mac book..
