Safe booting will not affect your files.

Thanx but i tried all that alredy, it worked once.... But then it just doesn't work again the next time i turned the iMac on.... Any other alternatives like booting from disk instead of the HD? And will this method not affect saved files either?

No it won't. Have you moved any part of the system, or any applications, to a different location where the start-up sequence can't find them?
Two other possible solutions:
Run the latest 10.6.8 combo updater again.
