Strange articulation changes in apple loops

HI all,

Often when I import an apple loop into a project it sounds totally different to the original in the loop browser. By that I mean that if I import a string loop such as "Capitol A violas" all the articulation on the strings changes in the project itself. Not only that but often when I am playing back a loop within the project, the articulation will suddenly change, from bowed to plucked for example.

I am at a loss to explain what exactly is causing this change, it appears random but I suspect that somehow the loop is getting a signal from somewhere as the effect is as if I am playing an EXS24 string sample and move the mod wheel, thus changing the string articulation.

This is driving me nuts, as I have spent hours already in forums trying to solve it. Has anyone got any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Zig

Thanks for the reply. I have been checking the CC1 signal... It seems that 2 things are happening:

1. Logic is receiving occasional and seemingly random cc1 signals from my keyboard... I have just opened a new project and watched as there are sudden cc1 signals despite me not touching the keyboard.

2. The mod wheel controlling cc1 is not resetting to zero but a value of about 108. The only way to get the cc1 value to reset is to get logic to reset when i stop playback.

I am trying to work out why i'm getting a random cc1 signal, but I also need to know how i can recalibrate the mod wheel to give values from zero to max (127)? Instead of 108 to max... Any tips?

Thanks again

You cant filter spesific midi controler messages.

This is not true. You can filter out any specific midi message using a simple transformer in the environment. ZZ, if you're interested I can give you a step by step for that, it's pretty simple and straightforward.

What you can also do, is disable Control Changes in Project Settings>MIDI>Input Filter. This will filter all MIDI control messages though, so it's a bit crude.

Best would be if the keyboard controller stopped generating unwanted CC#1 messages. What make & type is it?

Thanks for getting back to me everyone,

The keyboard is a Kurzweil SP2X. I've emailed their support but as it's the weekend I don't expect a reply for a while.

Basically what is happening is that the pitch control works fine, but the mod wheel is sending a signal randomly, but consistently so, varying from 102 to 118 as far as I can see.

Another strange thing with the mod wheel signal is that once activated it never returns to zero, but stays between a minimum of about 103 to a max of 127 (The max is obviously normal). This has the effect of cutting out all articulations below the then minimum of 103, which is of course most of them.

I have made logic return the setting to zero in preferences/midi/reset messages/controller 1 (modulation) to zero, but of course if I touch the mod wheel or it receives one of these phantom signals I'm stuck back between a cc1 of 103-127.

@Eriksimon: I tried the control changes input filter but the keyboard is still generating a signal which I can see in the transport bar. I'm not sure it the filter kicks in after the signal reaches logic. It seems to, as when I disable the notes option, I can no longer hear the keyboard but the transport bar still shows an incoming signal.

Oh wait...I see, the signal is visible but Logic ignores it with this setting... This would at least enable me to programme the changes in the hyper editor I suppose, without interference from the keyboard, but you're right, it is a pretty blunt tool.

Stopping the phantom signal is my main priority, but I would also love to know how to make the mod wheel respond properly and output a CC1 signal of zero when in the downward position, instead of 100+.

I think the transformer may be the best option for now.

Once again, thanks for your help on this...much appreciated.

Great, thanks Eriksimon, that was very clearly explained and works. The pesky mod wheel is blocked until I can get it sorted out.

I'd still like to know how to set the mod wheel parameters within Logic. I'm not sure if it is instrument specific or a global setting, but I've been searching for the last few hours and can't seem to find an answer.

Maybe I should open another thread and ask there.

Thanks again
