Ive tried updating on the apple tv and it fails and says it cant be updated at this time. So Ive tried with a micro usb cable and it just says 'Connecting software update server for ages'.
What can I do?

I too can't update any of my iOS devices from home. When I try over the air updates they fail. When I try to download the full install, it just hangs forever "connecting".
On my 2nd gen Apple TV, I try to update I get "The Apple TV update could not be downloaded at this time."
Weirdly, it worked at work using their wired high speed network to update my iPad and iPhone. But I don't think I'm taking my apple tv there to update!
I know my Internet connection is fine - I just bought a TV show off of itunes. Could this be regional? I'm in Chicago.
I to have good internet that downloads tv shows fine. I just total confused why I can't download this update. Im in London so Im not sure whats wrong!

I had the same problem with my ApplyTV 2; it would just hang and eventually say it can't update at this time. The same thing with my iPhone4S update, it would say it can't access the update servers. I tried switching off my router firewall and that didn't work. Then I read the following article: -

I manually set my ATV DNS to 8.8.8.8 and the same on my Mac and it all worked!

That solution hasn't worked for everyone. If that doesn't work try restoring the decvie in iTunes.

Trying to restore gives the same response - can't.
One other solution worked for some who are not in the US and that is to Change the Itunes store location to the US.
Seriously!?!? I have to change my DNS for an update? That's ridiculous.

Thanks!! I was having the same problem, so I tried changing the DNS to 8.8.8.8. It worked!! I wonder if I should go back and auto configure my connection, or leave it as is. Any suggestions?
I tried the DNS setting change via the Apple TV2 menu, (not to 8.8.8.8 but another one recommended on another post) and no luck. I tried restore via the apple tv2 menu, no luck. Now I am trying the option to update via itunes, but when I plug the apple tv2 into my computer (2011 mac pro, OSX Lion) via the micro usb, it doesn't seem to power the device? The led light does not come on. If I use the remote, the light blinks and I can start the reset (menu + down; or menu + play) and the led will blink rapidly, but turn off as soon as let go of the buttons.
ok. just tried setting the DNS on the apple TV2 to 8.8.8.8 (008.008.008.008) and it worked. Anyone know if that poses any kind of security risk?
This worked for me. Does this mean it is an ISP issue?
Changing the DNS to 008.008.008.008 via the manual ISP configuration, on the Apple TV 2 menu, worked for me after having experienced the updating issue. I'm UK based... recommend this approach.
Scott, Not necessarily. Make sure you restore the old DNS settings. After updating via the DNS route you shouldn't have to use 8.8.8.8
