Why can't I update my Apple TV?

There are a couple solutions

1) is restore the ATV using itunes

I have the same problem (2nd generation Apple TV).

I have tried updating over the air, no luck. I have changed Airport DNS servers to Google DNS and then back to ISP DNS. No luck.

I have connected the Apple TV to my Mac and tried to update via iTunes. No luck.

The device never can connect to or find the update server.

Thoughts?

Did you try theses instruction from another thread. Everyone who had success appears to have use OPEN DNS.

go to the ATV settings => General => Network => Configure TCP/IP => Manually=> Skip the IP address going directly to DONE = > Skip the Subnet Mask going directly to DONE =>Skip the Router Address going directly to DONE=> Now change the DNS Address to 208.067.222.222 ( before changing the setting write the number down so you can change it back once you finish) and hit done. Once you get the "Configuration Succeeded Message hit DONE and go back to Update Software. It will take a like 20 seconds to start downloading. Once the upgrade is completed follow the same instructions to go back and change the DNS Address to the original number.

Otherwise I'm stumped. you should submit a bug report to Apple via the Apple feedback webpae.

This worked for me as well. Funny I had to do the same kind of workaround with the ipad (gen1) and iphone (4s), I could not update either over the air and changed the DNS. to 8.8.8.8 (Google public DNS) and it worked as well

Brilliant! Worked for both updating my Apple TV and my iPad 2 via my Mac Mini. I do not understand it but switching the DNS address (whatever that is) worked like a charm.

Please help, I have the same problem but I have an Apple TV (1st generation), I had to restore and then if I try to upgrade it says Its already upgraded but not, now Im stuck at 2.2... I tried it all and nothing.. I even did the DNS thing with no luck..

Thanks Richard, this solution worked for me also. I had no luck with DNS 208.067.222.222, but 8.8.8.8 was the answer.
