I am considering upgrading my Mac to OS X Lion but word on the street is that my Aperture software isn't compatible. This is a bad thing as I am a photographer. Any help is appreciated.

Aperature does support Lion, however many people find it extreamly slow.

More relevant is what version of Aperture Are you running? Aperture 3 will run on 10.6.8 and 10.7.3 or higher.
As for performance a lot depends on your current hardware setup. Aperture will test your system especially if it is an older model. What system are you on, how much memory and what size and type of disks do you have?
Many folk here are running Aperture on Lion with no problems.
