1080p content?

Hi,

Am I right in saying that, now, when you buy a movie or TV show :-

- you are buying the SD and BOTH HD version (where the 1080p exsists)

- that the 1080p version will only stream to the new AppleTV and download to the new iPad

- and that this is why the iTunes Store on my Mac has "(downloading 720p)" on the detail column

- and, most importantly, if I ugrade to the new AppleTV and iPad at some point do I automatically get the 1080p version of movies and TV shows that I already own now or do I only get 1080p on stuff I buy from now on?

Cheers

I think I figured this out...

In the Preferences of iTunes, there is an option on the Store tab that says "When Downloading HD Videos, prefer:", and then you can select either 720p or 1080p. When I changed this to 1080p, the movie page on iTunes changed to "(downloading 1080p).

The reasoning is that not every computer or Mac can play 1080p movies (system requirements are at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3209).

I wouldn't think so...this is off of the ATV1 spec sheet..

  • H.264 and protected H.264 (from iTunes Store): Up to 5 Mbps, Progressive Main Profile (CAVLC) with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution: 1280 by 720 pixels at 24 fps, 960 by 540 pixels at 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
  • iTunes Store purchased video: 320 by 240 pixels, 640 by 480 pixels, 720 by 480 pixels (anamorphic), or high-definition 720p
  • MPEG-4: Up to 3 Mbps, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution: 720 by 432 pixels at 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

Max is 720p...and it doesn't sound like there are any updates coming soon for it...

Why not spring for the ATV3? If i'm not mistaken you don't get AirPlay with ATV1 either...and that's a pretty sweet addition to ATV...we use it with our ATV2 all the time...especially video chat...that's just crazy seeing that through a plasma... :-)
