I bought the iPad 2 about 4 months ago. It's near brand-new, with no scratches and no damage. I was hoping to trade it in to the Apple Store for a new one, either get the price of the iPad 2 taken of the price of a new one or get the new one free.

Apple don't do trade-ins - if you'd bought it less than 14 days ago from Apple then you would have been able to take it back for a refund, but you are outside of that period. You could see if any other stores do trade-ins, but you'd probably get more for it by selling it privately and putting that towards a new one.

It's not within warranty but must be worth at least £300, it's got no damage and looks basically new. All packaging and cables are intact, but I do not wish to go through a third-party site like EBay, simply through Apple...
If you don't want to open for bidding on eBay, a simple way to do that is eBay Instant Sale. Just put it up and youll have a quote from an authorized dealer in seconds.

What model is it? Right now you can get a brand new, 16 gib wifi, ipad2 for $399. If your model is the same, $100 less for ausex one seems reasonable. I was pleasantly surprised to get a bid of $200 for my original, 16 gib wifi iPad.
