Memorex travel drive doesn't show up on Desktop

Memorex 1GB mini travel drive doesn't show up on desktop. Bought this one because it specifically states it can be used with Mac 8.6. On Memorex website, info that I need USB Mass Storage Support 1.3.5. I have that in my extensions, but still no luck with jump drive. Am I missing something else?

Blue/White G3 Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier

Do you have other USB devices that are working?

Try this USB software for OS 8.6.

Edit: The B&W G3 has built-in USB, so the 1.4.1 SW will not work.

did you format the USB 1GB travel drive for use on your Mac?

often I see USB Flash drives come formatted for PC Dos file systems, normally they work out of the box, with Macintosh PC File exchange.
but it might not work with your Mac under a pre OS9 system until you reformat the USB flash device using a HFS+ format.

Yes, my other USB peripherals are all working - external floppy, CD burner, scanner, etc. And I tried the jump drive in the keyboard port, two different hub ports, and the one on the back of the computer itself.

Didn't format it and frankly don't even know how to do that. The instructions state that "For Apple Macintosh Mac OS 8.6 or higher (8.6-9.x USB 1.1 support only) there is no need to install any drivers. Go straight to Step 2." - which is basically plug it into a port. So I assumed it should work right out of the package.

The light on the drive blinks, the computer grinds, the light goes solid and then nothing appears.

Just had a thought. My USB is 1.2 - is it possible it literally means 1.1 only?

1.1 and 1.2 should be all the same. Do you have another computer you can test the jump drive on and format it with like in disk utility?

I have an (even) older Mac Power PC 6500, and a true antique SE30, but nothing else with a USB port. We do have a notebook PC and the drive mounts fine on it, so at least I know the drive itself is OK.

Found the problem. Checked Apple System Profiler with the flash drive plugged into a USB port, and found the drive listed with the other USB devices, so obviously the system was recognizing the drive, just not placing it on the desktop. Checked the Driver Name, and found that it was not the correct one (Mass Storage Driver). Apparently installing my Firewire external drive had also installed USB extensions, which I don't need. Turned those off, restarted, and travel drive appeared on the desktop. So it was a simple extension conflict. Thanks to those who looked at/replied to this entry. Maybe this will help someone else.
