Why isn't there an iTunes for Linux?

There is no iTunes for Linux. And all I have on my computer is Linux. Can Apple not make iTunes for Linux, or is there a security issue, or something? I want to know.

Other OS

Those running Linux are too small a majority for apple to devote Itunes development resources for. Heck, they can't even get Itunes to work with windows 7 and XP, and you want them to try with 9 different flavors of Linux?

Also, Itunes is proprietary software. Having to rely on the open source workings of linux's "insides" would probably reveal too much about how Itunes works and make it possible for the Linux world to create a better Itunes.

The most wonderful thing about linux is it doesnt NEED Itunes! Linux can, by use of certain drivers (libimobile), copy music and files directly to i-devices.

Yes, I can put my Ipad onto Ubuntu 11.04, and copy over music and files into indivdual directores. Drop and drag. There is no function to "buy" from the apps store, but so what, that can be done one the device.

google it, the library is called libimobiledevice. research what you want from there.

If you have a pc, I recommend the suite at www.copytrans.net to backup Itunes... all of it and much more.

also search for Idrive lite on the Itunes apps store if you have a iphone. it will backup all your contacts into a cloud. only idiots rely on Itunes to backup their phones contacts. had 3 friends get burned by losing 100's of contacts cause Itunes had "issues". Apple answer, "restore to factory default"!

capablancauk,

Yes, you are correct. Both OSX and the Linux kernel are built on UNIX. I've only used a Mac once, and it was to install an Apache webserver with MySQL and PHP. Knowing Linux made it easy. OSX is the dummy's version of Linux. That being said, every OS requires specific program hooks, drivers, etc. in order to function properly.

Could it be about digital rights? I don't know.

But the truth is, Linux is a full-featured, secure (who needs antivirus?), cutting-edge OS with enormous power. I use it every day for software development, and a Mac would only slow me down.
Although, I have no doubt that the reason both Microsoft and Apple oppose Linux is pretty obvious. $$$$$
