Snow Leopard hands on restart?

My IMAC with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 will hang upon restart. All the applications close and the desktop icons clear leaving just the desktop background picture. Also selecting an alternative book drive fails to start even when booting using the Option key. The alternate boot disk is not recognized even though System Preferences recognizes the disk drive.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Starting up in safe mode behaves well, but does not solve the issue with the normal boot-up. It does not solve the other issue of not being able to start up another valid boot disk.
