Time Machine doesn't see my NAS?

Well after talking on the phone will Apple about the AirPort Extreme's USB port "connection failed." every day. I was told that Time Machine is NOT supported with the AirPort Extreme and that I should get a NAS.

So, I walked into NCIX and picked up the Patriot Javelin S4. It says Time Machine compatible and Mac compatible on it. I have set it up but Time Machine doesn't seem to find the NAS? I am running Lion.

Mac OS X (10.7.3), AirPort Extreme Base Station 5th

That is correct. See Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk.

Just because it says it's compatible doesn't mean it is, unfortunately. And, some NASs that were compatible with Time Machine on Snow Leopard didn't get updated for Lion's tighter security requirements.

So, first, check with the maker to be sure it's compatible with TM on Lion (they may have an update).

Then, be sure you're following their setup instructions exactly. Each NAS has it's own mini-operating system, that interacts with OSX, and they all do it differently (even some made by the same company don't do it the same way!).

Unfortunate indeed. Still trying to get a hold of Patriot. They don't even have phone tech support, awful! After a bit of researching, many on the internet (months ago) have said it doesn't work lion and Patriot's engineers are working on a solution. However, I still don't see any firmware update from Patriot (they haven't released any beyond the shipping FW).

Kind of false advertising that it says that. One walks into a store and sees the NAS with all the features compatible, one should safely assume that it works with lion because if it didn't it would only say "upto Snow Leopard" especially since Lion has been out for a while now. Ontop of that the return policy is 15% restocking fee, which translates to about $45.

Sounds like it may have been sitting on the shelf for quite a while.

I'd take it back to the retailer and demand (politely but firmly) that they take it back for a full refund, and either put a warning on it or quit selling it. "False advertising" might be a phrase to use.

Yes, Lion has been out since July, and was in beta testing last February, so the makers had every opportunity to test.

Ok, so I seem to have gotten it to show up in Time Machine & work in Finder by using a guide from the following:

http://www.alexanderwilde.com/2011/04/os-x-lion-connection-error-with-afp-and-wo rkaround/

However, I get this error: There was a problem connection to the server "server: ".

That workaround allows using an incompatible NAS for data, but not with Time Machine.

As far as I know, there's no way to make such a NAS work with Time Machine on Lion.

With the soaring gasoline priceses these days, 40km drive there and 40km back to return the NAS.

Might as well keep it and use a third party backup utility. Got any suggestions?

I'd not recommend that. That NAS is not really compatible with Lion, and may not work at all with Mountain Lion. It's a "dead end" at best.

CarbonCopyCloner (and I think SuperDuper) can back up to a network, but again, I'd not recommend it. Among other things, you can't boot from a network location, so if your internal HD fails or gets corrupted, you'd have to do some gryations to get your data back. Read their instructions very carefully.

CCC is donationware, so you can try it before making a contribution.

SD has a free version you can use, but if you want to continue using it, you'll want to be able to just update (instead of doing a full copy), and perhaps schedule backups. For that, you need the paid version (about $30).

Well I was able to connect to it out of the box. I followed the instructed terminal tutorial inorder to try making it show up in Time Machine.

It was $399.99 - $100 Instant Rebate = $299.99+13% HST = $339 - $100 Mail in Rebate = $229.

Not bad for a 4 Bay NAS.

Shipping is impossible for me as I'm in Canada. 😀

Is it worth the extra cash to go for a Netgear ReadyNas? Also 4 bay, price is $345 incl. taxes.

I would probably say YES my self since Patriot is not responding to my support ticket (been days now).

I took your word for it and returned it... If it takes _____ that much effort to make it work on Lion, it could very well mean that it doesn't work on Mountain Lion in the future.

I ordered the Netgear ReadyNas NV+ v2 from BestBuy.ca for $598 incl. tax. 😀

I just picked up a Patriot Javelin S4 today, and ran into the same problem. However, the latest firmware update, released on July 12, does fix the problem, and re-enables AFP (and TM) without the need for any workarounds. Once I applied the new firmware, everything started working.
