I'd like to hook up a Viewsonic VA721 as a second monitor (first is a 24" Apple display).

I hooked up a mini display port to VGA adapter and plugged it it in. No signal.

I went to System Prefs, but could find no evidence of the VA 721.

Any tips?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 5,1

If you are successfully communicating with a display that supports DDC, you will see the display's name appear in:

About This Mac > ( More Info ) > Graphics/Displays ...

... below the info for the display card itself. Displays that do not provide their Make & Model, such as "VGA Display", or just "Display" are not likely to be providing their proper resolutions either. Without the Mac knowing the acceptable resolutions, the screen stays dark to avoid damaging your display.

If the Displays system prefs do not show an Arrangement tab (might click Detect Displays) or for some odd reason there is an Arrangement tab but only shows your main screen, then something is physically wrong with the connections. It could be a bad port, bad cable, something wrong with monitor. Maybe the monitor is not sending the proper EDID info to the computer.

Unless Displays Arrangement shows all the monitors there is nothing you can do with the software.

Fior starters you should experiment with the simple stuff like replacing the adapter. Sometimes these things can be a flake with broken connections inside the pigtail or it's attachment to its plugs.
