copy/move problem: error code -50

I keep getting and error code when I try to copy or move files on or within an external USB HD.

"The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)."

Has anyone encountered this?

This won't answer the error -50 problem but another way to move the stuff is to compress it with, say as zip. Then move the zip to the target and expand the zip on the destination.

If all this stuff to move is in a folder then right (control) click on the folder to bring up the finder's contextual menu and select Compress to produce the zip file.

Thank you. I don't know about the size of the files being the problem, as I was able to copy a folder of files ok, but then couldn't move it into another folder...

But I did find that reformatting helped. I thought I had "apple-ized" the drive (which had formerly been used in a Windows machine, but perhaps I selected a wrong option in doing so.

In any case, completely re-doing the HD (new partition, new formatting) seems to have fixed it.

Thanks again!
