I cannot set up my HP LaserJet Pro M1217nfw MFP to print wirelessly. I do not have a router and bought this machine because I was told this printer was an easy ad hoc install. I have a MacBook that runs OS X 10.6.8.
4 hours later and I'm dying here! SO NOT HAPPY!

I just spent the last two days on this and have finally sorted it out. It actually isn't that hard to do but for some reason, no one has consolidated the information in one place!
First and foremost, make sure that you have all the latest and greatest firmware updates for your printer, your computer and your mobile devices.
Next, you need to connect your printer to your network via an ethernet cable, this is the only way to get in to the printer softare to configure it for your wireless network.
Navigate the printer menus on the keypad to Reports>Config Report and print this report. It will provide you with the IP adress and IPv4 address for the printer.
With the printer connected to your network and powered on, point your browser to the IP address of the printer. If this doen't work (it didn't for me) use the IPv4 address.
This will open the configuration panel for the printer and will let you configure the wireless for the printer so that it can join your wireless network. You will see various tabs across the top. Select network. Then along the left you will see wireless. Choose that. Now you should see a list of wireless networks available including your very own home network. Choose that one, enter your password and hit apply.
Disconnect the ethernet cable and you should be ready to Airprint from all devices. This worked for me, I can't imagine it won't work for all...then again...🙂
I have the same problem. I followed our instructions, but the IP address didnt work and the IPv4 number is just a bunch of zeros. any other suggestions?

Thanks! I did not get a chance to respond before you figured it out but I wanted to let you know that after many hours of ******** and complaining, and I mean HOURS, it just worked. I don't know what I did or if there was a magic sequence BUT it only worked wirelessly through the router.
I purchased this printer because I wanted to set it up ad hoc for my mom. She does not (did not) have wireless, only ethernet so I had to purchase and set up a router so she could print. If there is a way to set it up like that, I still am at a loss.

It's actually not difficult to set up AT ALL and you DO NOT need to follow all those crazy steps. You can do it all right from the setting on your Mac. Watch this instructional video, it takes literallya minute and a half.
Sean, I think that the printer driver hosted by Apple that you can download for this printer has been updated since the original postings here. It's always a good step if you are having trouble to first use a cable and with the printer connected by cable, do a software update to bring down any updated drivers...
Oh, trust me, I did haha. I got everything all set and updated but couldn't get the wireless to work. Did a little ibt of searching online and had a lot of people with the same problem, so when I found that easy solution I just figured I'd share. Especially with this being one of the top 3 search results on Google, I figured it was a good place to share the info.Thanks for the response though. 🙂

I just got one of these also and also have not had any success setting the wireless up. Habe you sorted it out?
You CAN also Airprint if you plug the printer into a router via an ethernet cable but that kind of defeats the purpose of having a wireless printer.
