Set Up and Use an Allowance

Like a traditional allowance, an iTunes Allowance is awarded to your recipient every month—from $10 USD to $50 USD—but in the form of an iTunes Store credit. You will need a credit card, which gets charged each month, to set up an allowance. Important: Before you set up an allowance, check with your recipient to find out if he or she already has an existing iTunes Store account or Apple ID. If so, it's important that you enter this account ID when setting up an allowance. Otherwise, it will be difficult for your recipient to manage his or her purchased music.Looking to control what your kids spend their money on? Consider setting up an iTunes Allowance.

    Set up an iTunes Allowance

    1. In iTunes, click iTunes Store in the Source list to go to the iTunes Store homepage (if you're not there already).
    2. Click Buy iTunes Gifts under QUICK LINKS in the right column.

    6. In the First Installment section, choose whether you want to give an allowance now and then on the first of the month thereafter, or wait until the first of the month to start.
    7. In the Recipient's Apple ID section, choose the "Create an Apple Account" radio button if your recipient does not already have an iTunes Store account or Apple ID. If he or she does, make sure that you choose the "Use recipient's existing Apple Account" radio button, and enter the ID in the two Apple ID fields. It is important to use your recipient's existing iTunes Store account or Apple ID (if he or she has one) when setting up an allowance.
    8. Type a message, if you'd like, in the Personal Message box.
    9. Click Continue. If you're not already signed in to the iTunes Store, you'll be asked to sign in.
    10. If you opted to create an iTunes Store account for your recipient, you'll see a "Create an Apple Account" screen. Your recipient's email address will be used as his or her account ID; make sure that it's one preferred by your recipient. Enter the required information, then click Create.
    11. If you opted to use an existing account ID, or after you create an account for your recipient, you'll get a confirmation screen. Verify the information, then click Buy.

Once you've purchased an iTunes Allowance, your credit card will be charged for the full allowance amount on the first of every month. You can cancel an allowance at any time from your iTunes Store Account Information page by clicking on Manage Allowances, locating the allowance you wish to cancel, then clicking Remove.

Any time you buy music or audiobooks, the purchase price (+ tax) will be deducted from the balance.

Send Music, Videos, Audiobooks, and Apps as Gifts

If you want to put more thought into giving an iTunes Store gift than sending a Gift Certificate or iTunes Gift Card, give a specific iTunes Gift. This allows you to personally pick a song (or create a playlist of songs), album, video, audiobook, or app to send to someone. You can gift any song, album, video, audiobook, or app to anyone with a valid email address.

    To send an iTunes Gift:

    1. In iTunes, click iTunes Store in the Source list.
    2. Find a song, album, audiobook, video, or app that you want to give to someone.
    3. Click the arrow to the right of the Buy button; in the resulting menu, choose the Gift option.
    4. Once you've clicked Gift, you'll either be asked to sign in with your account name and password, or you'll see a "Give a Gift" page. You'll need to fill in your recipient's (and your) details, such as names, email addresses, and a personal message. It doesn't matter which screen you get first, you will get both. You can send along a personal message with your gift in the "Give a Gift" page—be sure that you enter a valid email address too.
    5. Once you've successfully signed in and completed the gift form, you'll be brought to a page to review your purchase and confirm it.
