Max memory on MacBook Pro 17 inch Mid 2009 model

I am running A total of 8GB ram on my MacBook Pro 17 inch Mid 2009 model. Is that the most that it can handle or can I put in larger so-dimms? Like 2-8GB So-dimms.

Here's OWC's page for your 2009 macbook pro ram configurartions and prices. According to OWC page for that model 8GB is the max. If it could be more OWC would be one of the first to sell the larger dimms.

Maximum RAM on a 17" mid 2009 MBP is 8 GB. The proper RAM is 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM. To install anything else is inadvisable. Installing 16 GB would be installing trouble.
