Lost DVD drive

When I install iTunes for Windows on my hp4500 it puts in a registry entry that disables the DVD driver. When I remove this registry entry (as recommended by HP) iTunes complains that an essential registry entry is missing. Is there a workaround?

HP's recommendation for losing the cd drive is;

Step 4: Clear the upper and lower registry filters

Clear the registry filters for Device Manager error codes 10 , 19 , 31 , 32 , 39 or 41 using the following steps:

1.

Click the following Microsoft Fix it Solution to clean the registry filters automatically:

If you cannot use the Microsoft Fix it Solution, continue using these steps to clear the upper and lower registry filters manually.

2.

Unplug all non-essential external plug and play devices, especially cameras.

3.

Click Start , and type "regedit " into the Start Search field.

The registry editor window appears.

4.

Select Computer in the main window.

5.

Click File , Export , type a filename that is easy for you to remember, and click Save .

A copy of the registry has saved for back-up purposes to the Documents folder. If problems occur after using these steps, browse to the file and double-click it to restore the registry.

6.

Click the plus sign (+ ) next to the following items in the list:

* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

* SYSTEM

* CurrentControlSet

* Control

* Class

7.

Select 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318 . Make sure you have selected this exact key name.

8.

Select the LowerFilters value and press the Delete key. Confirm the deletion by clicking Yes .

9.

If an UpperFilters value is also listed, select UpperFilters in the right window and press the Delete key.

Confirm the deletion by clicking Yes .

10.

Delete all other UpperFilter and LowerFilter values within the 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318 key if they exist.

11.

Close the registry editor and restart the computer. The disc drive should now be recognized by Windows. You may need to uninstall your disc recording software, restart the computer, reinstall the CD/DVD writing software, and then restart the computer again if the software no longer recognizes the drive (see next step).

Reinstalling or doing a delete and install of itunes does not work. This problem has been repeated in XP, Vista and 7. If you can reccommend a solution it would be appreciated.

🙂 perfect, thanks. This looks to be our culprit:

The driver AFS.SYS is installed on the system.

Try Solution 2 from the following document:

iTunes for Windows: Optical drive is no longer recognized, or "Disc burner or software not found" alert after install

Next, to add back the iTunes UpperFilters entry (to get past the "registry settings" message you'd get from iTunes without the filter in place) I'd start with the following document, with one modification. At step 12 after typing GEARAspiWDM press the Enter/Return key once prior to clicking OK. (Pressing Return adds a carriage return in the field and is important.)

iTunes for Windows: "Registry settings" warning when opening iTunes

🙂 No need to apologise. Glad you got things working again.

One day I just might find out what software thinks that it needs the AFS.SYS driver.

Yeah, it's a bit of a mystery with something like this. I've seen old versions of HP Memories Disc Creator implicated in this at least once, but I've got no good feel for what the commonest (or even common) culprits are.
