it depends if you are on a public network (then yes).
If you are on a private network (then it depends on the type of network you have, but typically not necessary). Also, do you have anti-virus installed?
firstly i am on a wifi network at my house and i have no anti-virus as i was told by every1 not to get any
good. no need for antivirus. check your router settings and see if your routers firewall is enabled. you can usually access your wifi router by typing in 192.168.1.1 in your browser address bar.
I do not use my MBP firewall and I am using wifi that is hooked up to a cable modem. As long as your wifi is password protected then your home networkj should be fine.
See Do I need a firewall?. Regarting the anti-virus, you should read my Mac Malware Guide.
(Note that my pages contain links to other pages that promote my services, and this should not be taken as an endorsement of my services by Apple.)
so should i use a firewall on my laptop in the settings?
in my opinion NO. I have used my MBP at home, school, and work for the last 5 years without a problem.
MBP?

Right you don't need any antivirus software. Waist of time, money and computer resources.
You also do not need to turn the firewall on. Another waist of T and R.

(1) Make sure the router's firewall is on and properly configured.
(2) Make sure your WLAN is protected by WPA2 encryption.
(3) You may turn off the Mac's firewall.
(4) Remember to turn it back on if you use your MBP to connect to public networks (Starbucks, library, airport, etc).
k but how do i do steps 1 nd 2?
Read your router's user guide or set-up guide. If you misplaced them, you can usually download them from the vendor's support site. Mostly you access the router's interface by connecting to it with an Ethernet cable and pointing your browser to an address such as 192.168.1.1. The exact address will appear in System Preferences > Network under "Router:" when the connected interface is selected.
Ok. Whoever decided it was a brilliant idea to suggest not running an anti-virus is either trolling or has no idea what they are doing. You do realize that Apple products are susceptible to viruses correct? Yes, a huge portion of the viruses out there are written for the Windows platform but that doesn't mean Apple is invincible. It just means that there is less of a chance. Do you run flash? Do you run java? Then your vulnerable. Plain and simple run an anti-virus.

First of all, have you actually read and understood the material in the Do I need a firewall? article referred to over a year ago? It is still relevant.
Further, you mention this in connection with viruses, Flash and Java. The firewall does not protect against malware of any kind, certainly not malware downloaded through Flash or Java vulnerabilities. All the firewall does is prevent un-asked-for incoming connections, which are not used as the infection means by any malware on a Mac to-date. The firewall will neither prevent infection nor prevent malware from "phoning home."
