1080 Pana tv but Apple TV2 will only do 720 ?

Have done some searching about this but I'm wondering why my Apple TV2 connects at 720 when the tv can do 1080 ...

It is because the AppleTV does output at 720P. It cannot output at 1080P.

Do you mean the talk about the new AppleTV doing 1080P. There was no mention about the AppleTV2 doing 1080P. Infact the AppleTV2 is limited to 720P, that won't ever change.

And yes I agree my AppleTV1 doing 720P on my old 50" DLP HDTV and AppleTV2 doing 720P on my newer 40" LCD are quite nice. I am looking forward to getting an AppleTV3 doing 1080P and new 60" LED/LCD. But that might be aother year. 😟

And also the ATV3 will be even more useful with the new OS 10 (Mountain Lion)... for Airplay from your Mac... I think ATV3 is a great move and was totally needed... Can't wait to get mine...

It's true 720p video are nice... and it's a good HD... but 1080p is much more... and according to some videos downloaded from iTunes in 1080p... the size is really good.
