Lion Mail Yahoo IMAP Sync Inconsistent

Observed behavior: Mail is syncing with Yahoo IMAP every five minutes, but when I delete or mark messages as read from the Yahoo website, iPhone or any other device, the Mail app will not reflect these changes even after the auto or manul sync. In order to force Mail to sync accurately, I have to take the account offline and then switch it back online. Then, Mail syncs correctly.

If I force the re-sync WITHOUT first taking the account offline, the sync is not accurate. Even if new messages appear in the mailbox, the other deleted and marked-read messages are not accurately reflected in the sync. Again, the only way to make it accurate is to take offline and bring back online. Of course, if I restart Mail, this also resolves the issue. Restarting Mail is the same thing as far as the Yahoo IMAP server is concerned.

This problem is easily reproducible. I have tried a number of remedies.

1. I deleted the original Yahoo IMAP account and added a new Yahoo IMAP account with a new name multiple times. No change.

2. I restarted my Mac to see if this helps. Other than the temporary effect of restarting Mail, this does not change a thing.

3. I have looked on the Yahoo site, and well... Here I am. 😕

4. I also looked on Gmail site, almost more helpful.

5. Finally, I looked on the Apple Support Communities but cannot find an answer.

So, let's see if there are others having the same issue and maybe there is a solution somewhere.

Thank you.

try this:

quit Mail

open Keychain Access application

delete all items in the login keychain that refer to your Yahoo account.

launch Mail again.

You will be prompted for your password a few times and asked if you want to save the login info in your keychain.

Sometimes I find that old passwords stay in the keychain even after you have changed your password with a mail provider (Yahoo, Google, etc). Then I think sometimes a background Mail process will try to use the expired items from Keychain etc etc.. and silently fail.

it may not work, but it's easy to try.

Not sure if this is what you're talking about - when I open my Mac Mail app on my computer and get my messages from my Yahoo account, the message are not deleted. The same message will download to my iPhone or iPad when I open those.

There use to be an option in the Mail application to delete messages from the server after downloading. That option is gone, and it's really a nuisance.

In addition, if I delete messages from my Yahoo account via the web, those same message that have already been downloaded to my Mail application are also deleted. This is simply wrong!

Hi Ron,

Did you ever find a solution for this problem. I am having the same trouble and think it is Yahoo specific. If I read or delete an email from iPhone, iPad or server, it does not mark it as read or delete in Apple Mail without closing and reopening app. Sync command does not do the trick either. It does seem that mail sent from another device will show up in Apple Mail send folder.

I know your post is old, so maybe you've figured it out 😉

Thanks,

Kat.

This is definitely not Yahoo-specific, nor is it new. Definitely seems to be a bug in Mail.app. This has been happening at least since 10.5 (am now on 10.8.2), and I have a GoDaddy hosted IMAP account.

Same symptoms...I delete emails on my Mac in Mail.app. I've gotten into the habit of forcing a manual sync. The emails disappear from the Mac, but several minutes or sometimes many minutes later, if I look on my iPhone or iPad, the messages have not been deleted. If I subsequently go look on my Mac, or at the server through a webmail browser - they're back.

However, if I delete the emails from my iPhone or iPad - they really do get deleted.

As stated up above - quitting and reopening Mail.app can force a real sync that gets things going back in sync...it seems like maybe Mail.app somehow forgets to actually sync...so when this starts happening - i.e. I notice deleted emails still appear on my iPad - if I quit mail and reopen it, it also shows the previously deleted email. So the symptoms seem like there is a "cache" of actions (deletes) in Mail.app that is not getting processed to the server. When you quit, this list seems to get flushed and whatever is causing Mail.app not to sync to the server gets remedied and on restart, the not-deleted emails show up because Mail.app now syncs with the server. Occasionally it seems Mail.app somehow can come out of this without being restarted...I'm not sure if that happens when it's "kicked" by some other event, e.g. an incoming message, to sync.

Extremely annoying.

BTW, not sure if it's related, but occasionally Mail.app seems to "forget" the mail account password. I haven't seen any direct correlation with the above issue, but maybe once or twice a month on my 24x7 connection I wake the computer and Mail.app is asking for the email account password. Entering the correct password usually doesn't fix it, but restarting Mail.app does.

I'm having this same problem with Network Solutions as the IMAP host. All inidactions are that it's a Mac Mail problem. All of the sudden sync just stops synching. The tasks run without complain, but nothing happens. iPhone and iPad work find and see all IMAP changes, but Mac Mail does not. Quit/restart causes Mac Mail to catchup and work for a while longer. I now have to restart it several times a day. It's extremely frustrating.

This is an old thread but I thought I'd respond. It seems a lot of things are blamed on Apple mail but in reality, at least for this issue, it seems it's not an Apple issue. I use Yahoo mail and it works fine mostly, in the mail app. The only issue I have, is syncing 'sent' mail from one IOS device to another. It syncs fine with OS X, i.e. o a desktop, but if I write an email on an IOS device it won't show up in the sent folder on another IOS device.

Yahoo does not officially support IMAP mail but it does work, for the most part with the correct settings, I have not found a way to get the 'sent' mail to sync, that's all.

IPAD3, IPHONE6 and IMAC.

I'm going to try different settings for the out going server and see if that works….

PS using IOS8 and Mavericks on desktop..

I know have 'SENT' mail synced on my iMac, iPhone and iPad, no matter which device sent the mail.

This was using Yahoo IMAP settings, supposedly not supported by Yahoo, but works. It's all about the settings in the mail prefs for each device. It took little fiddling but after experimenting and send mail to myself I finally saw it synced on all devices….
