Will 1080p content play as 720p on the 2nd gen ATV?

I have two TV's at home - 1080p and 720p (1080i). Both of them play media from my iTunes library via homesharing. I have ordered the 3rd gen apple TV to play download and play 1080p content on my 1080p TV.

My question is: will the 2nd gen Apple TV connected hooked up to my 720p TV will be able to play 1080p content by 'downscaling' it? If not, can I buy a another 3rd gen Apple TV and hook it up to my 720p TV and still be able to view 1080p content downscaled to 720p?

The ATV2 plays 1080p files downloaded from iTunes, but still displays at 720p.

These iTunes files have a relatively low bitrate for 1080p files, so it is possible that it may struggle with files from other sources. I don't actually have any of those to check it.

But, basically, from what I have seen you should be ok mixing ATV2 and ATV3 using the same files. It is what I plan to do eventually.
