"An unknown error has occurred" iphone 4 when downloading any app from app store

This appears to be a logic flow design malfunction by the App Store. How could we get Apple to correct this flaw?

I experienced the same issue after updating, but had not changed my password. The suggested resolution worked for me as well.

I started getting this error on my iPhone 4 (iOS 5.1) the other day. I had not changed anything with my Apple ID or on the phone in weeks but when I tried updating or downloading new apps via iPhone App Store, it was prompting me with "An unknown error occurred". After reading this thread this is what I did to solve it:

- Go to Settings -> Store

- Scroll to the bottom click on your Apple ID

- Choose Sign Out

- Click Sign In -> Use Existing Apple ID and re-type your ID/Password

Now I could download and update.

No idea why it needed me to do this.

That works. Another win for the forum.

Same problem and same fix! I suspect yesterdays iOS5 update I accepted is the root cause for every iPhone 4s requiring a sign out and relog in to re-initialize Apple Store security. Did you also update your iOS? The install and restart of my IPhone4s should have prompted this required sign in/out process.

Yay for Adam S Apple. That worked perfectly after a half hour of turning on and off the phone. only problem is, a friend had me do a hard reset and i lost all my texts. *sigh*

I renewed my credit card details at Apple and it caused the error message.

It was easy to understand what happened/ what to do by reading your message.

I hope that Apple make the message more friendly.
