The amber light on my airport extreme is flashing an amber light. Doesn't that mean I need to update? I forgot where to go? I went into utilites and into airport, but all I got was the big dialogue box and the small flashing amber light. If this is NOT an indication of an update, how do I get it back to a solid green?

When in the Airport Utility, have it check for updates.
If there are no updates for your Airport device, then see this Apple article on blinking amber light.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Select your AirPort Extreme and click Manual Setup
Click directly on the word Status (2nd line) and a window will open to explain why the AirPort Extreme is whining
It might be a message that an update available....or it might be somethiing else
AirPort Utility will offer some suggestions to remedy the issue, whatever it might be.

I have the same blinking amber problem, and non of the suggestions offered here, Apple's Support pages or anywhere else I have googled have solved my problem. I have pushed that reset button over a dozen times with NO results. I have the latest updates. Airport Utility has the Manual Setup button greyed out. I keep hitting the Rescan button with the Discovering Airport... wheel spinning, but no result. I trashed prefs. Interesting though, all worked at first when connected to computer after different tries, but indicated I needed to connect to WAN, which I did. Now no matter how I reset, change connections, all I get is a blinking amber.
Any other suggestions? Thanks.
The steps Bob Timmons pointed out (Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility) solved my issue since it was a required Airport firmware update.
I think the thing that may be confusing for some, me included, was that the network connection was fine but it was the hardware that needed an update. Two completely different aspects of a properly configured network. Also, the regular Software Update check would not pick up on the required firmware update for the Airport.
