My Macbook Pro is running very hot - CPU 155- 175 Enclosure 1,2,3 reading 103.
CPu usage minimal - under 5%.
Battery life has seemed poor occasionally, but not consistent.
Any advise?

What applications are you using on your MBP when you see these temperatures? Are these temperatures Fahrenheit? What model MBP do you have?

Safari finder word excel and parallels a few windows apps -
Activity monitor never shows idle below 94%
so nothing unusual.
Assuming that the temperature figures are Fahrenheit, they are within acceptable bounds. Never the less, what speed are the fans running when you see these temperature levels?
A picture of your temperature monitor would be helpful.

Fans were around 2000.
Contacted Apple - these are not within specs. Case should be no more than 95 and that is under heavier load.
Did hardware reset and will evaluate further.
Seems like fans running at 3400 now and case temp 95 while cpu actually higher than before at 165 F.
Surprising heatsink is only 130.
But this may have helped.

Is this a defect - not sure I want to run auxillary programs to control fans. That shouldn't be necessary.

MBP Battery Troubleshooting: To check for a bad battery, go to Apple/About This Mac/More Info In the System Profiler window, select the Power entry & look for Health Information. If next to Condition it says "Check Battery" then your battery is probably on the fritz.
Per your user manual: Do not operate your MacBook Pro on a pillow or other soft material, as the material can block the airflow vents. Never place anything over the keyboard when operating your MacBook Pro. Never push objects into the ventilation openings.

For prolonged use, place your MacBook Pro on a flat, stable surface. Do not place your MacBook Pro on your lap or other body surface for extended periods of time. Prolonged body contact can cause discomfort and potentially a burn.
Based on the screen shot you have provided, I note that the memory statistics suggests a lot of activity. If that is the case the temperature that are reflected in the monitor would be appropriate. As I respond to you, this is what my iStat pro registers:
The above reflects a minimum of applications are running.
I agree with you regarding running fan control applications. A properly running MBP should not need that type of intervention.
Based on what you have written and provided, I do not see any real issues. If you are so disposed, a trip to the genius bar would not hurt to at least give you some reassurance that there is indeed no problem.

I will recontact Apple.
145-155 CPU temp does seem unusual along
with temps over 100 for the enclosure with
fans only runing 2000 rpm.
According to Apple normal enclosure temps are 95 or less.
Clearly running CPU this hot cannot be good for life or performance.
Battery checks normal
Understand on the blogs there have been a few issues with heatsink attachment
but not sure how that would affect fans not coming on.
Obviously best when fans are low and inaudible and I have ordered
what looks like a really excellent external cooler the TILT 15
which should make this all better than what it is now.
Just don't want to start with a lemon!
How long have you had this MBP? If it is less then 14 days take it back for a refund and then buy another NEW UNIT.
Apple has a No Questions Asked 14 day return policy. Don't let them try to fix it, even if they say it is out of spec and they will look at it. Simple fact is they will do nothing as although your temps are higher then normal, IMHO, they are not what Apple would call TO High.
