Q: Upgrading RAM on an iMac

How do I go about increasing from 1 gig to 2 gig of memory on a 2007 intel iMac?

Actually your iMac has the capacity for up to 6GB. If you increase the RAM you may be very surprised how well it performs. Here is a video that shows how to increase the RAM.  You can also use that same site for buying RAM, they're a reputable company that specializes in Macs and has great support and prices.
