This is crazy. I went to my address book on my MacBook - and has vanished. there is literally one contact left which is just weird... Anyways I went to Itunes and selected Sync Address book contacts, ALL.
sounds easy.. goes thru syncing routine but it does not import my address book from iphone.
Suggestions?

Try resetting the iPhone.
Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home button down at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
Then check your contacts.
If your contacts still don't sync as they should, might be time to restore your iPhone > iTunes: Backing up, updating, and restoring your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch software
No luck..
Iphone was reset. I can see it looking for contacts in tunes, but it's not reading anything.
