I would have worried when it DID make a sound! My original iPad and my iPod Touch have both been silent during charging.

@Philly - I think that the OP is talking about the initial "chirp" sound when the iPad is first plugged in for charging.
If you have the volume adusted properly and still do not hear the sound - you may have system sounds muted. do you hear the email swoosh or keyboard clicks - if not ....
If you lose sounds for keyboard clicks, games or other apps, email notifications and other notifications, system sounds have been muted.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the task bar. Double tap the home button and in the task bar at the bottom, swipe all the way to the right. The speaker icon is all the way to the left. Tap on it and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock rotation can be accessed via the task bar in the same manner as described above.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.
Thank you! Same question as lance, correctly interpreted by demo and the answer fixed my problem. (I lent my iPad to a colleague who must have turned the mute on.) Thank you again.
I too had this problem on my wife's iPad 2. Your answer fixed it immediately. Thanks very much.
Demo, your help with chirping when first plugging in iPad for charging was spot on. Thanks
Our iPad cover was hiding the little switch. Good tips. Thanks
I Haven't visited this discussion in quite some time and there have been a few updates to how this works on newer Devices, but it's nice to know that some people are still finding these suggestions helpful.
Thank you for responding to let me know. 🙂
Spot on instructions.Thanks .
