Alternately, you can use Gparted (on a CD or a USB pendrive) to wipe the entire drive, but remember to format it under a file format OS X will recognize (ie, not any EXT-something file format). FAT or NTFS will do the trick. ZFS too, but I don't think Gparted supports this one yet. There's an option in Gparted to completely erase all data, but I can't for the life of me remember how it's done. It's command-line, though, not GUI.

Edit: found it... Here:

dd if=/dev/zero of=/path-to-your-disk-device

Where /path-to-your-disk-device is something like /dev/sde.

In Gparted's GUI, click on the Terminal icon on the top menu, then enter the command above. Press Enter, and let Gparted do its work. Depending on the size of your hard drive, it could take a while. Also remember that the SMC fan controller isn't active in Single User or Live CD modes, so your Mac could overheat a little bit...

Did either you FrenchToast bother to read this thread BEFORE posting? Apparently NOT. The OP does not have any install disks, thus the OP has NO WAY to reinstall the OS, thus both of your posts offer useless advise.

There's no need to be rude here: the OP asks how he can wipe his HDD clean, then adds that he doesn't have the install DVD handy. He can very well wipe the HDD clean using any other method, then hand his zeroed-out MBP to someone else, who'll then have to reinstall the OS.

As to heeding anyone's advise or not, that's up to the OP, but I were him, I wouldn't bother investing 15 USD in a Leopard disk (he currently runs 10.5.8, doesn't he?), and directly shell the 30 bucks needed for a Snow Leopard install DVD you can still find here and there.

My two cents...
