Why can't I get email on both Outlook 2007 and my Iphone?

I had been able to send/receive email on both my iphone and Outlook accounts until 3 days ago. On Friday, I connected my iphone 4s directly to my computer, synced it and installed an update to my Iphone. (I believe it was 5.1?) After that, I have had problems with my email going to my outlook account. Now I have spokent with my ISP and Microsoft and the problem is still not fixed. I currenly can send/receive email from my iphone but if I set up my email on outlook I can only send emails but not receive them. In addition I cannot receive email on my iphone4s but I can send them. I have followed every written instruction from both Charter and Microsoft that I have been given without a solution to the problem. currently I have email working on my iphone since I removed my email setting from outlook. This is very frustrating!!!! Now I am reaching out to the apple community to see if anyone else has had this issue. If anyone has any ideas on what is the cause or has a solution I would greatly appreciate it!!!!

Try deleting the mail account on the iphone, in settings/mail,contacts,calendar. Then click add account, and set up your account using your ISP mail settings. The info will be the same as the mail settings in outlook. Make sure your fetch new data is set to push.

I deleted and reinstalled my email account on my phone which works fine. I am still unable to establish my email in outlook. It will send but not receive.

Then it's an outlook problem, don't you think? You're best go to the microsoft help forums. Archive your emails in outlook then delete the account and then re-add it. Also login to your ISP webmail account in your browser and check the settings directly there. That's the best I can do, seeing as I'm a Mac guy.

I appreciate your help. Just looking for any angle to get this to work. Mac is new to me so I thought I would try and see if there was something from this end. I have tried your suggestion about archiving and deleting and readding the account. Have tried multiple times with the same result. Will check the ISP webmail account directly. Haven't tried that yet but did speak with their representative about the issue who didn't suggest it. Thanks for the help!!

Oh, you're using outlook for Mac. This is a problem outlook has working with sync services in the background. Make sure outlook is up to date, but my friend had no end of issues. One good reason why I stay well clear of Microsoft software for Mac. Try this forum.
