iPhone 4S no sound except ringtones works

No sounds work on my iphone except ringtones. Text tones, email, itunes, pandora, etc. does not play anything. Also, when I hit the volume buttons I get a picture of the speaker and it says "ringer" over it but there is no volume bar. I've cleaned out the headphone jack since that fixed a no-sound problem on previous iPhones but it didn't help.

I've tried turning bluetooth/wifi on and off because this seemed to help for some people but the only thing that helped with is that my phone now makes the noise when you plug it in to charge but still nothing else but ringtones.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

did you make sure your iphone isn't mute ?

Try this:

Settings>General>Accessibility>AssistiveTouch>Toggle AssistiveTouch On

you'll notice a "white ball" on your screen (aka AssistiveTouch)

Touch the white ball>Device>Mute>Unmute (nd result should make your iPhone unmute)

now try.

Alternatively,

Do a Restore.

Steps for Mac/PC.

1. Open iTunes, Backup your iPhone

2. Click iPhone in the left plane

3. Select Restore (on the right plane)

4. Follow onscreen setup (on the iPhone) until the set up iphone.

5. Select restore iPhone (select iTunes)

Note: you iTunes library need to be re-synced after this process.

Hope this helps,

Blueloony

I had tried the hard reset a billion and it didn't help but it appears to be working now though. The way I fixed it was I have a USB port in my car that I can plug my iPhone or iPod into to play music. I usually have my iPod hooked up to it but I unplugged that and plugged my phone in and played iTunes. After this the sound started working but stopped a few minutes later so I went back out to my car and did it again. It has now been working since yesterday afternoon so I'm hoping the problem is solved.

My secretary had this problem with her iPhone after updating to 5.1 Took it to Apple store. They couldn't fix it either. They replaced her phone. Suggest you do the same. As the battery drain problem makes apparent, Apple has a real software problem that affects hardware integrity. If enough people start forcing Apple to replace hardware, maybe they will figure out that spending money on software quality issues will help their long term bottom line.

Solution.

My 4S exhibited the same symptoms, I.e., not sound expect for ringtones. I also noticed when changing th volume with side buttons, the screen indicated 'headset', causing me to believe the phone thought I had headphones plugged in. I didn't. I also noticed these symptoms started immediately after I had been taking pictures with th phone outside while it was showing. Possibly condensation got into th headphone jack. Aft trying all the ideas listed above, I turned the phone off and left it near a fan, facing th jack. After some time I tried it again, everything works fine.

Maybe this will help someone.
