Is the ipad explosion proof... I work in the petroleum industry and would like to know if I can use my ipad in an explosive atmosphere..

I think you should ask your safety supervisor. I don't think anyone here will tell you it is explosion proof.

I have to agree with Bob. This isn't the place to get that information. You need to check with your site safety manager or equivelent.

Is anything explostion proof? I do think, given its solid state flash memory system the iPad is more tolerant to bumps and drops - although the glass may not be, but you'd need to check with Apple as to the corosiveness etc of the gasses it's exposed to. The right kind of case may help but beyond that I think it's guesswork from all of us.

I think the issue here is whether the iPad could CAUSE an explosion, not survive one.

The iPad is not rated XP. AFAIK, very few, if any, consumer devices are rated for XP.

I think the OP is asking whether the iPad can cause a methane gas explosion not if it would explode.

My GUESS is that if you short the right two pins on the 30 pin charging connector, you can get a spark.

And it could spark just plugging it in, without a short. In any case the iPad is not XP rated and should not be used in an environment that requires that.

You definitely need to clear it with your safety guy. I would GUESS if you are allowed to have cell phones then the iPad MIGHT be okay since its similar tech. But ultimately the safety person has to allow/disallow becuse if the unthinkable happens you'll want your tush covered by clearing hte electronic device.

You keep posting claims about a company that has "changed" the iPad to make it intrinsically safe, explosive-proof, etc... Beside the fact that I don't think any company can "change" such a quality in the iPad, could you please provide some explanation and details? Like, perhaps, the name of this company?

If someone has developed a solution for this, Apple will not delete a mention of it. Third party manufacturers of cases and accessories are posted all the time.
