Yesterday morning, Safari unexpectedly begain opening multiple tabs without a prompt after I accepted the latest Java update. This slows my Mac to a crawl and I am wondering if I can correct this myself, or have I picked up a virus? I am running the latest version of Lion and my Mac is only a couple of years old. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

More likely a cache issue.
Quit Safari.
Go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Relaunch Safari.
Disabling the Lion "resume" feature will help also since it "caches" web page content.
Open System Preferences > General
Deselect Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps.
~ (Tilde) character represents the Home folder.
For Lion: To find the Home folder in OS X Lion, open the Finder, hold the Option key, and choose Go > Library

Thank you so much for the help! How can I prevent Safari from opening up all of these pages when I turn my Mac on. It takes about 15-25 min for Safari to cycle through all of those pages before anything else can function correctly. Thanks again!!!

Hi, I have a same problem in my macbook but I think this is a virus.
When I restart safari, after deselect the option "restore window..." the safari keeps open so many tabs. Many, many, many....and dont stop!!!!

This was annoying me all morning. Tried deleting plists and things to no avail, then found it:
Close Safari
Go into Library (your users library)
Scroll down to a folder called Saved Application State
Look for a file called com.apple.Safari.savedState
Delete it
Restart Safari
I'm having the same problem only I followed your instruction and I don't have a folder or file that you named.
I did a computer search and no such file came up.
I'm using Safari 9.1.2 in Yosemite OS.
Is this a Safari or Java issue?
