ipod 3 will not sync contacts with lion

ipod contacts won't synch if icloud contacts is active.

System Preferences -> iCloud

Uncheck Contacts -> choose Keep Contacts

Start itunes

Plug in ipod

in itunes select the ipod

select info

select Synch Contacts

Apply

My address book has not been sync'ing for 1 1/2 years.

I have been to the Apple store- and they could not determine how to sync-

After the sync- do I re-check iCloud / contacts?
