Hold the alt key and click.

The alt key is the one just left of the cmd key.

Apologies, you're doing nothing wrong, I give you a bum steer.

It's ctrl-click. I'm sorry, don't know what brain freeze came over me there.

Hi there TD , thank for the comebacks , I still can't get the trash bin to open , just maybe I'm trying in the wrong place, I bring up a picture from one of my albums clik on it then there is a arrow on the bottom of the picture

it will then bring up the trash to send the picture to, is there a other way to open the trash bin.

    Try the following:

1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your

         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.

2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your

User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).

    home.PNG

or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto
    folder

    iP11mtlioncache.png

3 - launch iPhoto and try again.

NOTE 1: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

Thanks Toad,   close but no cigar.   I deleted the cache db and plist file and relaunched.  Still no trash bin in the left column.

Before we reinstall iPhoto log into another user account on your Mac and see if iPhoto shows the Trash bin there.  If it doesn't then a reinstall of iPhoto is indicated.

Wow, yes, when logged in as another user and going into iPhoto the trash bin does show up in the left hand column.  Which means the problem must be in my preferences somewhere right?  And yet we deleted my preferences....hmm.  Any ideas?

NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

    1 - close all applications.

2 - open your Home/Library folder and Option-drag (copy) the Preferences folder to the Desktop.

3 - select the contents of your Home/Library/Preferences folder and drag them into the Trash bin in the Dock.  You will be asked to provide your Admin password.

    4 - reboot.

5 - run the application again and determine if the problems is fixed

6 - If the problem is fixed:

    A - open the working Home/Library/Preferences folder.

B - Open the Preferences  folder on the Desktop, select all of the contents and drag them into the working Home/Library/Preferences folder.

C - When the Copy window pops up check the "Apply to All" check box and then click on the Don't Replace or Skip button.

    Copypref2.PNG

    D - reboot.

7 - If the problem is NOT fixed, drag the contents of the Preference folder on the Desktop into the Home/Library/Preference folder and replace the entire contents that were created by clicking on Replace.

Yikes,  that's hard core and scary.  But I did it.   Unfortunately the problem was not fixed in step 6 or 8.

    Something's corrupted I guess???   Re-install iPhoto?

How about step 5?  Did iPhoto show the Trash bin then?

If not then rather than reinstalling iPhoto, as it works OK in the other account you may have to reinstall the system.  Before doing so try downloading and reapplying the  Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 updater.
