I am absolutely sick and tired of trying to create a back up.  I have been endevouring to do this all year.. and still I am no further forward.  I have a Mybooklive attached to my Netgear.  I have wiped it clean and started again. .. and STILL I dont seem to have a successful back up on there.  It is driving me to distraction.  I get the following errors...

this back up started on March 9 - it seems to stop and restart each time the amount to be backed up reduces... until it gets to say 2gb..

I tried at one stage to go in and edit as per another post on here using terminal.. got stuck at a particular stage and gave up as noone responded how to help.

I just want a back up.  Western Digital have offered to replace my hard drive - but it will be a reconditioned one and not a new one..

I just hate it.

I don't know why... I 've had  the Time Machine must create a new backup for you. message a thousand times and done everything that is mentioned here.... I don't have quite enough knowledge to know what to do.. other than scream!

  • Kappy Level 10 Level 10 (257,850 points)

You apparently have some defective files that are halting a complete backup. Note the number of lines in the console logs you posted that start with "Error."

  • Pondini Level 8 Level 8 (38,720 points)

You're getting very slow backups with lots of I/O errors (error -36), and problems writing to the NAS.

Looks like a problem with the Netgear and/or the network drive, or, if you're connected wirelessly, a terrible connection and/or lots of interference.

Is the network drive compatible with Time Machine on Snow Leopard?  Do you have the latest updates?

  • Alex Nicholls Level 1 Level 1 (5 points)

I tried doing a back up with my MBP directly connected to the WD Mybooklive.  It took ages and at the end of it got the Time Machine must create message...

Yes it is compatible. & yes it is up to date.  I have resisted upgrading to Lion as I know WD external drives really struggle with Lion.

I've had it for 16 months.  These problems have being going on since Christmas.

That's a different problem.  It's getting a negative value for the estimate of what's changed and needs to be backed-up!

Start by Verifying your internal HD to be sure it's not a directory problem.  See #6 in Using Disk Utility if you're not sure how to do that.

Then check your exclusions in Time Machine Prefs > Options.  Make sure there isn't any overlap (such as excluding both a folder and a file or sub-folder inside it, separately).

Then do a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting, to be sure the file where the exclusions are kept isn't corrupted.

If none of that helps, your installation of OSX may be damaged.  Try installing the "combo" update, per Installing the ''combo'' update and/or Reinstalling OSX.

If still no help, install a fresh copy of OSX (that won't disturb anything else), per the same article.

I have no experience with network backups, let alone wireless, but does "directly connected" mean you physically plugged the MyBookLive into your MBP, which would eliminate interference issues? If not, have you tried a direct connection either between your MBP and MyBook Ethernet ports or with the MBP plugged into one of the router's ports, and, if so, did it change anything?

  • Alex Nicholls Level 1 Level 1 (5 points)

I connected my MBP directly into the Mybooklive.  No. Still failed next time round.

I didn't say to upgrade to Lion.  Try installing the "combo" update (10.6.7 if that's what you're stil running; or perhaps upgrade to 10.6.8), per the link provided.

If that doesn't help, try a fresh copy of OSX (Snow Leoaprd), per the same article.

The backup is also running very slowly; that may be a problem with the network or NAS, but you might also try the things in the green box of #D2 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • Alex Nicholls Level 1 Level 1 (5 points)

Re installed  10.6.8. Rebooted everything.  Now have the external hard drive attached to my MBP seeing if using the ethernet direct .  this is what is happening now - still got the minus number -

if I do a Snow Leopard install, I don't have a reliable back up anywhere! So not sure what to do now.  It is still chundering away with negative figures.. I might contact Apple Care as I have cover!
