Installation stalls at "Moving items into place"

When I install new software, it seems to hang at Moving items into place. I have to do a hard reboot to get the computer back.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

In the Finder, press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.

Select "/var/log/install.log" from the file list. Post the messages from the last installation attempt, starting from the time when you launched the Installer or Software Update. Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. Edit out excessive repeats, if any.

I am having the same problem. I've been having it since I got my Macbook Pro (almost a year ago). I've done the whole "checking permissions" thing a million times and it never helps. The last couple of times, the only way I was able to update was to wipe my HD, install the update, and then put everything back on again. The first time it happened, someone at Apple had a quick fix but I don't remember what it was. Apparently this is a realtively common problem, but since it still keeps on happening, I'm wondering what to do. If it's a problem with something in my data, is there any way I can scan it to get rid of the problem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
