Slide Show

I have Aperture 3.2.2 and am trying to do my first slide show. I created the slide show and it is in the same 'project' as the photos. I dragged and dropped the photos into the slide show. When I deleted a photo from the slide show and emptied the trash the photo disappeared from my folder in the project! This is not good... how do I stop this from happening? Is ther a way I can get the photo back after I emptied thw Aperature trash? I had a backup and use Time Machine.

Thanks for help!

Hi Barbara,

there are two options to delete from a slide show: If you option click on an image in the film strip you get the options

  • Remove from Album (shortcut: delete key)
  • Delete Version (shotcut: cmd-delete key)

If you accidentally deleted the version and moved the version to the Aperture Trash and emptied the Aperture Trash, then you should be able to recover your master image file from the trash bin on your Desktop, unless you emptied that too.

My advice to you: 😝

  • unless you are sure, what pressing the delete key will do, use the menu entries to delete and look at the key bindings in the menu
  • before you empty the Aperture trash, inspect it carefully and use the "put back" pop-up menu entry on any items you trashed accidentally
  • before you empty the System Trash, inspect it.

Léonie

Hi Barbara. What do mean by "Folder" when you write

When I deleted a photo from the slide show and emptied the trash the photo disappeared from my folder in the project!

Images are contained by Projects and Albums ("Slideshow" is a special kind of Album). They are not contained by Folders. Folders hold only other containers.

Is the Image still in your Project?

Hi Barbara,

now I an confused: what do you mean by "original project"? 😕 A project in your current library or a project in a previous version of your library?

I 'control' clicked and removed the images..instead of deleting them, and I still have them in my original project.

  • If the image versions are still in the "original project" inside your current library, then you only removed them from an album - no need to restore anything from back up - just drag the images from your project back to the album where they are missing.
  • But if they are no longer in your current library, then you will need to restore them to your library:

Have you looked into your trash bin on your Desktop? If you did not empty it, the images still are in your Desktop trash - you can drag those from the trash bin to the Desktop and reimport them into Aperture.

If you need to restore them from a Time Machine Backup, an easy way would be first to open a Finder window showing your Aperture Library Package contents:

  • Select and Ctrl-click your Aperture Library in the Finder, then select "Show Package Contents".
  • You will see the Folders inside your Aperture Library - Drag the "Masters" folder to your Finder Sidebar for easy access.
  • Then connect your Time Machine Disk and enter Time Machine; go back in time, until you come to a date before you deleted your image.
  • Browse the "Masters" folder, the projects are organized by year - month - day and locate the missing image file. Select it and restore to the Desktop, then import again.

I think, it will help you, if you get a better understanding about the organisation of an Aperture Library and the items you use to contain and to organize your images. Kirby Krieger has written some very helpful intructory posts, see here:

Hi Barbara,

probably you have deleted some versions of images that have several versions. Then there are still versions of the image in the corresponding project and nothing gets sent to Trash on the Desktop, if you empty the Aperture Trash. Only when Aperture deletes the last version and removes the master image file, then that goes to the Trash folder on your Desktop. So just drag the images from the project back to your Slide Show.

Good luck for the restauration of your Slide Show.

She deleted the version from the slide show album. As the folder was under the project and the slide show was in the folder when she deleted the image from the slide show it no longer appeared in the folder but was still in the project.

Remember a folder will only show images from the containers it contains not from the containeres it is in.

(I'm sure you're all aware of this but the thread seemed to get really confused at the end 😕)

Frank,

Barbara never actually described the folder structure she has - are your referring to my reconstruction in the screenshot example for Kirby?

You are right, what's written in this thread is still confusing, but Barbara must actually have deleted image versions, since she saw them in the Aperture trash,; removal from the album should not move anything to the trash. 😕
