can I use my iPad 2 to connect to Apple TV wirelessly

I have a friend who has cancer and her lifeline is her iPad 2 and her TV.

She lives in Canada and most of her shows are in the states and watches HuLu Plus allot.

Can she view her shows from her iPad and connect to Apple TV remotely without the need

of a HDMI? or does she need a iPad 3?
