Magic Mouse will not scroll sideways

I have same problem. Only way to get the pointer to move across the screen is to swipe the pointer up & down really fast while trying to move sideways at the same time. I have checked the settings and tried restarting the mouse, the computer and replacing the battery. Nothing works. How did you fix your problem?
