Smart Playlists are still in iTunes, but not syncing to my iPhone 4S?

Hey guys,

I tried searching the forums but only found threads about Recently Added playlists that have disappeared from iTunes and devices all together (probably because of accidental deletion)...

The problem I am having is that today all of my Smart Playlists, including Recently Added and Recently Played have disappeared from my iPhone 4S, but are still intact and available in iTunes. I'm assuming this happened during an auto-sync following plugging in to a power source to charge.

Can anyone help me restore the Smart Playlists to my iPhone 4S??

I have exact same problem. Phone did auto sync and now those playlists are gone. My phone has been acting weird just in last couple days, at least with sync and backup issues. Hope solution come soon.

I am having the same issue. My playlists are still in iTunes. Some places online said to just edit that playlist and edit it back but that did not work for me.

This fixed it for me. I plugged in my iphone to pc and checked the music tab under my iphone info. The sync music box was not checked. I don't know why, but maybe it happened when syncing over wifi. Not sure. I checked the box to sync all music and did sync. My smart playlist were back on my phone.

I had also turned off icloud backup before that because I was having so many issues. I don't know which made the difference or it was a combination of the two,but its worth giving it a try. I would plug into computer first and see what is checked under music tab.

Okay, this worked for me but it might be a temporary fix, I'm not sure.

Right click or control click on the playlist in iTunes you want on your iPhone that isn't showing up. Duplicate the playlist, delete the old one. Sync and the playlist will be there on your phone.

I just found a solution that worked for me that I read in another forum.

If you have ANY rules for your smart playlists that include the "IS NOT" or "DOES NOT" criteria, apparently this will cause the problem.

I will say that my Recently Added and Recently Played smart playlists were default ones, I never modified their settings and so I'm not sure how they spontaneously became a problem, but both had a rule stating the "Kind" IS NOT a Podcast.

When I right-clicked the smart playlist, chose "Edit Smart Playlist" and removed the rule stating content was not a podcast - my next sync attempt put the Smart Playlists back on to my iPhone!

This must be a bug they will hopefully fix in the near future. Give this a try and see if it works for you as well. Good luck!

Solution/work around:

Add a new smart play list.

File > New Smart Playlist. From this point a pop up will appear.

Match following rule is selected

(Date added) - (In the last) - (2) - (weeks)

No limit set

No match only checked items

Live update selected

Then <ok>.

Change name of smart playlist to something like 'New Music' and Sync to IPhone/IPod.
